Get Your Machine Setup Out Of Artisan

Summary

If your roaster already connects in Artisan, you do not have to copy the settings across by hand. Artisan keeps its whole configuration in one settings file, and Rostoc reads that file directly: save an .aset file from Artisan, then add the machine in Rostoc with Import from Artisan. If you would rather read the values yourself — to check them against a machine manual, or because the import needs a second look — they live under Config » Port and Config » Device.

Steps

  1. Open Artisan on the computer where the roaster already connects.
  2. Go to Help » Save Settings and save the file somewhere easy to find, such as the Desktop. It is saved with an .aset extension and holds the full configuration, connection included.
  3. In Rostoc, open Machines from the sidebar, click + Add Machine, and choose Import from Artisan.
  4. Select the .aset file. Rostoc reads the connection details and how each channel decodes, and creates the machine. Anything ambiguous in the file is flagged for you to review rather than guessed at.
  5. Run Test Connection before relying on the machine for production roasting.
  6. Close Artisan before connecting in Rostoc. A USB, serial, or Bluetooth connection can normally be held by only one application at a time.
  7. To read the values instead of importing them, start with Config » Machine, which shows which machine setup is loaded if the setup came from one of Artisan's ready-made machines. That name is usually enough to find the same model in Rostoc's catalogue.
  8. Config » Port opens the ports configuration. The serial parameters live here — the communications port, baud rate, byte size, parity, stop bits, and timeout — and the MODBUS tab holds the rest: the host address and port for network connections, and per reading the device id, register, function, and divider, plus the decoder when a value spans two registers.
  9. Config » Device shows which device is selected and, on its extra devices tab, any additional channels.
