Probat Setup
Rostoc connects to Probat roasters through several paths, and the right one depends on the exact model and control generation. Probatone entries are supported over Ethernet (Modbus TCP), and PLC-connected Probat G/UG entries are supported over Ethernet. Probat P Series and Probat Sample entries are experimental — test the setup before relying on it for production logging.
Supported models
Section titled “Supported models”| Catalog entry | Status | Connection |
|---|---|---|
| Probatone | Supported | Ethernet (Modbus TCP) |
| Probat G/UG | Supported | Ethernet (PLC) |
| Probat P Series | Experimental | Local network |
| Probat Sample | Experimental | Local network |
| Probat G/UG WebSockets | Experimental | Local network |
Check the Probat catalog pages for the exact entry that matches the machine in front of you. A supported Probatone entry does not mean a P Series or G/UG entry is supported too.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”- An Ethernet connection between the roaster and your network, or directly to the computer.
- The roaster’s IP address — from the machine display, your existing setup, Probat documentation, or a network scan during setup.
- Other roasting or logging software closed, so it does not hold the connection.
Add the machine
Section titled “Add the machine”- Connect the roaster and computer to the same local network, or directly with an Ethernet cable.
- Open Settings -> Machines in Rostoc.
- Click Add Machine and search for Probat.
- Select the catalog entry that matches your model and control generation.
- Review the connection details and enter the roaster’s IP address or host.
- Run Test Connection.
For Probatone, the connection details follow the Ethernet (Modbus TCP) guide. For PLC-connected G/UG setups, the Siemens S7 guide covers the network checks.
Validate the first roast
Section titled “Validate the first roast”Run a short validation roast before production use:
- bean temperature and environmental temperature match the roaster display
- burner, airflow or air pressure, drum, and fan streams appear as feedback streams, not extra temperature curves
- labels and units make sense for the exact machine
- the saved Batch reopens with the same streams, units, and chart routing
For experimental entries, treat the first several roasts as validation before the setup becomes production infrastructure.
What Rostoc reads
Section titled “What Rostoc reads”Streams depend on the catalog entry:
- Probat P Series and G/UG (local network) — bean temperature, environmental temperature, burner, air pressure, drum, exhaust fan, intake and exhaust air temperatures, cooling air temperature.
- Probat Sample — bean temperature, environmental temperature, burner, air pressure.
- Probatone (Ethernet) — bean temperature and burner setpoint; the larger Probatone entry adds environmental temperature, pressure, drum speed, and fan setpoint.
- Probat G/UG (PLC) — bean and environmental temperature plus burner, fan, and drum feedback.
The model page in the catalog lists the exact streams for your entry.
Machine controls
Section titled “Machine controls”The Probat P Series entry exposes direct controls — burner, exhaust fan, drum, drives, burner enable, cooling fan, and stirrer. Probatone entries expose burner (and on some entries fan and drum-speed) setpoints. Other Probat entries are read-only or still under review — check the exact model page before expecting control.
Telemetry and control are separate capabilities. See Machine controls for how controls are armed, operated, and kept safe during a roast.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- Test Connection fails — confirm the roaster and computer are on the same network and the IP address is right; check that Probat software or another logging tool is not holding the connection.
- The wrong streams appear — confirm the catalog entry matches the control generation; P Series, Sample, G/UG, and Probatone entries have different stream sets.
- Controls are missing in Roast Studio — the entry may be read-only, or the control may still be under review for your model. Check the model page and Machine controls.
- The connection drops mid-roast — for the local-network entries, Rostoc notices a closed connection right away, marks the Machine as disconnected, and starts reconnecting on its own. Keep roasting from the machine and see what Rostoc does when the connection drops mid-roast.
See Troubleshooting Connections for general network checks.
Support report checklist
Section titled “Support report checklist”If the roaster still does not connect, send:
- exact Probat model and control generation, plus the catalog entry selected
- operating system and Rostoc version
- how the roaster is connected (network or direct cable) and its IP address
- whether Probat software or another roasting app was open
- screenshots or notes showing which readings were missing, stuck, or mislabeled
