Summary

With a direct Ethernet cable, the computer needs an address that looks like the machine address, but is not identical. The safest default is to keep the machine settings as they are and adjust the computer Ethernet adapter to match that range or, if the machine allows, change the machine IP to a fixed IP where the last number is different from that one of the computer and it's not 1.

Steps

1. Find the machine IP and subnet mask.
2. Set the computer Ethernet IPv4 address manually.
3. Choose a different IP in the same range. For example, if the machine is 192.168.10.10, the computer could be 192.168.10.20.
4. Use the same subnet mask shown by the machine.
5. Leave other fields blank unless the machine manual gives values.
